Since the pilot programme’s commencement in September 2021, we have developed 7 seminars, 2 practical workshops, a ‘how to’ guide for a landscape and ecological management plan, a case study document for the value of nature for health & wellbeing, poster materials, maps and images for our community natural capital map and three ‘in-the works’ seminars, including a volunteering engagement event… all in the midst of a pandemic!
Our pilot groups: East Goscost PC, Bottesford Net Zero, Scalford Environment & Conservation Group, Greetham PC and Above & Beyond CIC; are learning a great deal of information about natural capital, ecosystem services, biodiversity, woodlands, landscape management, habitat mapping, water quality and so much more. They are slowly developing their own community natural capital map through our platform to share their training experience and produce a map that details specific areas where you can find ecosystem services that benefit nature and society in their local landscape.
We have had some fantastic feedback so far, with Herbert Daybell from Bottesford Net Zero stating he “wishes all parish councillors and community groups would have access to this training”, and Sarah Lambert from the Scalford Environment and Conservation Group stating that “it’s really helpful meeting others with the same interest, and very useful, it shows how much work is involved”.
We will continue to provide support to our pilot groups for years to come, and will look for further funding to expand this project to other parish councils and community groups in the region as well as at the national scale. Our goal is to be the main hub of information and training for ecosystem services and natural capital across the whole of the UK, and with your help, we can make that happen!
